There has been an explosion of memory foam mattresses coming from China, but can they make high quality visco elastic memory foam? I believe you would be taking an unnecessary risk in the quality of a these foam mattresses made in China. Memory foam quality is dependent on many factors such as the manufacturer, proprietary formulas and processes, density determinations, firmness levels and thickness. Unique to memory foam is the high density values (4 – 7 pounds per cubic feet,PCF) but that is certainly not all you need to consider. Also important is the IFD value (Indention Force Deflection).
A high density mattress needs to still be soft and elastic.

Many manufacturers are aware that consumers of these space age mattresses are looking for high density values. An unscrupulous manufacturer could easily incorporate additives into their formulas that would increase the weight of the mattress and therefore inflate the density value. But this could result in a mattress that is too stiff and would not conform to your shape. The stiffness of a mattress can be determined by what is called the IFD value (Indention Force Deflection). For memory foam mattresses, you want high density (PCF) values and low stiffness (IFD) values.

There is also concern among consumers about the odors of this foam. When this foam is new it does have its own characteristic odor but this will diminish in time. Contrary to what some may have you believe, the odor of this foam is not really a big issue. As always there will be a small fraction of the population that is allergic to something. Just as some people are allergic to penicillin, there will be a small number of people who do not like the initial odors of memory foam. Allergic reactions to this foam is very rare and not the norm. However, if you are prone to allergies then I would
certainly stay away from made in China memory foam, at least until their quality improves. The odor of this foam is mostly dependent on proprietary formulas and processes and this is something that is only learned with time and experience. Most of the older more experienced visco elastic foam manufacturers are in Europe and the US.

This is not to say there is no high quality memory foam coming from China, but it will be harder to find and confirm. Remember to shop for this foam with a density value in the range of 4 – 7 PCF and with an IFD value somewhere in the range of 12 -16. If you find some of this foam with a high PCF value but the IFD value is above 20, then chances are it will not be as elastic and temperature sensitive.
